Among the various facets of Central Romana is its role as a pioneer in promoting domestic tourism. The company ventured into the tourism sector after witnessing the successful evolution of its businesses and to fulfill the Dominican Government’s desire to promote this promising economic activity. The development of the industrial free trade zone and the establishment of numerous foreign companies necessitated accommodation for key executives.
As a result, the decision was made to transform an old employees’ club into a small hotel equipped with the necessary amenities to meet the requirements of these executives. This marked the birth of Hotel Romana, and given its considerable demand, the decision was made to further expand into the tourism industry on a larger scale.
The Casa de Campo tourism project began in the 1970s with 50 hotel rooms, 22 golf villas, and 4 family homes, including one belonging to the renowned Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta.
Today, it boasts 280 rooms, 10 restaurants, bars of various varieties, and over 1,200 family homes. Approximately 60% of these homes are owned by Dominican nationals, 17% by North American citizens, and the remaining percentage by residents from various European, Latin American, and other countries, making it a true international tourist center.
Due to Central Romana Corporation’s investment in the growth of Casa de Campo, it has evolved beyond a mere resort. It has transformed into a resort with a community of vacation residences where both locals and foreigners live year-round, enjoying a wide range of amenities expected by international travelers.
Among its facilities, Casa de Campo features the renowned golf course “Teeth of the Dog,” designed by the acclaimed architect Pete Dye, ranked among the top 30 courses globally. In addition to this, it has four other courses and is set to inaugurate an additional 27 holes, making it one of the largest golf centers in the world. Costasur is a real estate project responsible for the real estate assets of Casa de Campo. In 1998, Central Romana Corporation Ltd, continuing with the projects outlined in the company’s master plan, began the construction of the new International Airport of La Romana, Casa de Campo. Central Romana Corporation, Ltd., through its subsidiary, Airport Management Services, Ltd, inaugurated it on December 14, 2000, at an approximate cost of RD$1,000,000,000, replacing the Punta Aguila International Airport.
Features
Within its internal perimeter, the airport covers an area of 3,850,000 m2. Its design took inspiration from a sugar mill, giving rise to its slogan “The Sweetest in the Caribbean.” The airport has three terminals: the International Commercial, the International Private Aviation, and the Domestic, all completely separate from each other. The Commercial Aviation Terminal has been equipped with the most modern equipment, lighting, sound systems, air conditioning, counters, electronic security systems at its doors, fire detection systems, X-ray machines, among others.
For the convenience and enjoyment of passengers, the waiting area includes duty-free shops, cafes, the world’s most famous fast-food restaurant chains, a smoking area, taxis, banking services, and a call center, among others. It also has the Premier Lounge for passengers who want more privacy while waiting for their flights. The International Private Aviation Terminal, located west of the International Commercial Aviation Terminal, shares the ramp area with the Domestic Aviation Terminal.
Inaugurated in December 2004, it has also been equipped with modern equipment and furniture that make it unique in terms of privacy and service to its users. The Domestic Aviation Terminal has been designed to provide quick and efficient service to meet the needs of passengers on domestic flights. All three terminals have separate parking for vehicles. Since 2003, after the construction of the Casa de Campo Tourist Dock, cruise operations began at the docks on both sides of the mouth of the Ría Romana.
The airport serves as support for the arrival and departure of passengers arriving on these vessels, supported by simple but efficient procedures in terms of security, operational, and service.

In December 2002, Central Romana inaugurated the opening of the newest private port in the Caribbean. With the capacity for two large cruise ships, this dock located on the Romana River represents another link in the tourist development of areas such as Casa de Campo, Altos de Chavón, La Romana, and Bayahíbe. Alongside La Romana International Airport, Casa de Campo, it has revamped the logistics of handling tourist cruises in the country.
Since the early 20th century, the Central Romana Corporation has operated the La Romana Port located on the western bank of the Romana River. From its inception, the port has served various functions, acting as a dock for cargo ships, primarily transporting goods like sugar and molasses, as well as a passenger vessel.
As the capacity of the Romana Port was exceeded, a new port was constructed on the east side of the river: Romana. Today, the new La Romana Port, Casa de Campo, built on an area of about 40,000 square meters at a cost of approximately 250 million pesos, is directly operated by the Central Romana Corporation, Ltd.
The new port facilities feature two platforms or docks, a passenger terminal, and parking, with dimensions including an East Dock of 255 meters in length, a West Dock of 225 meters in length, a 1,000-square-meter terminal, and parking for 24 buses, among others. Passengers using the La Romana Port, Casa de Campo, have convenient facilities designed specifically for travelers’ needs, where they can easily access transportation services tailored to cruise tourism requirements.
