The housing program in Central Romana has managed to make thousands of houses in the urban and agricultural area in the region that benefit employees and their families.

Regarding environmental issues, the company is steadfast in its commitment to continue implementing the best sustainability practices seeking to reduce their impact on the environment.



The company has offered facilities for housing to more than 5,000 employees and workers, through a modern program in which the beneficiary receives at no cost, the gross housing in addition to providing interest free funding facilities for the construction of floors, doors and windows.

The company has in its 369 bateyes multiple dwellings for singles and 5,372 homes, at no cost to its employees and families. These houses have water service and electricity supplied by the company for the nearest to the city of La Romana communities. Other service receive state electricity corporation.

In addition to this, about 400 employees and workers live in houses and apartments owned by Central Romana, rent free.

Central Romana and its subsidiaries are committed to environmental sustainability through agricultural processes, managing to reduce their impact by recycling organic waste and taking better advantage of our resources.

The company, in its mission to preserve the environment, collaborates and maintains close ties with different institutions dedicated to environmental conservation of the area, including the Ministry of Environment of the Dominican Republic and the Regional Directorate.

The company maintains a program of different tree planting sessions in specific areas, such as the mining area of ​​El Peñon and river basins, with the supervision of forest inspectors and the participation of school students and company employees.

More than 3,000 plants such as Nin, Heart Pigeon, Purple Flamboyant, Almond, Ceiba, Flor de Sol and Acacia species have been planted. With this it seeks to improve the rivers and dams water supply in the area as well as improve the plants and animals welfare.

The planting program is designed for the months of February, March, April, May and June of each year globally recognized as Earth Day, Environment Day, and Arbor Day, among others.

One way to contribute with the preservation of the forest, and avoid deforestation, has been the substantial investment made by the company to manufacture precast concrete sleepers, thus avoiding the use of imported or domestic wood for the railways used in the sugar industry.

Various recommendations are given to the staff working in the company as measures for water conservation; these are within an educational material that provides rules for the rational use of water, both in the work areas and at personal level.

The company has started to reduce the amount of water used in the industrial area by using evaporated water from sugarcane juice to generate steam for the mill to use during the sugar harvest.

Costasur Dominicana, the corporate division that operates real estate for the tourism sector, has reduced by 50 % the consumption of water in golf courses and green areas by automating the watering system.

The company also uses other sugar cane residue as organic fertilizer called “cachaza”, which is a result of the sugar making process and it is used in sugarcane planting and golf courts as a nutrient, maintaining a sustainable life cycle.

Another action by Central Romana for environment preservation is to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by about 7 million gallons per year with the installation of a new biomass boiler for power generation.

Along with this they are implementing a plan that consists of using electrostatic precipitators in the boilers, which will reduce the particles emitted by more than 95%.

In the field, Central Romana does not burn the sugar cane during the cutting process, as many other mills in the world do. Cutting in green the almost 150,000 acres of sugarcane planted, represents a reduction of over 42,000 tons of CO2 equivalent gases per year emitted into the atmosphere, which contributes significantly in reducing greenhouse gases.

With these steps and other future projects, and in compliance with the laws of our country the company remains firmly committed to the environment.
