Proterra renews quality certification for Central Romana sugar mill
The PROTERRA Foundation certified for a fourth consecutive year the the agricultural processes of the Central Romana sugar mill in terms of social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
The approval was ratified after an exhaustive on-site audit during five days, in which the technicians toured the facilities of the mill in the industrial zone, the sugarcane fields, the batey communities and the sugarcane outgrowers, as highlighted by Central Romana in a press release.
“Once again our agricultural and production processes have the quality seal established by international standards, demonstrating the commitment of responsibility that our company has with its workers and consumers of the sugar we produce” emphasized the Administration of Central Romana in its communication to the media.
The PROTERRA standard is accredited by the certifying agency Foodchain ID, which validated the system and procedures for the production of sugarcane and its derived products, after executing good practices of implementing, tracing and monitoring a responsible and sustainable agricultural production in all stages of its sugar process.
As part of its policies, PROTERRA bans the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s).
In the harvest that ended in June of this year 2021, Central Romana announced that it had produced almost 400,000 short tons of sugar, after grinding more than 3 million 358 thousand tons of sugarcane.
At that time the company also reported that it paid more than a billion pesos in bonuses to its employees and workers. Central Romana Corporation, Ltd. is the largest private employer in the country, guaranteeing work to more than 20 thousand people.
