La Romana, Dominican Republic. – The United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Leah F. Campos, carried out a two-day institutional visit to the sugar operations of Central Romana Corporation, after her recent statements made during the luncheon address at the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAMDR), where she announced that this would be her first official visit to a private company in the country.

Ambassador Campos was accompanied by a delegation of representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). She was hosted at Central Romana by its president, José Fanjul Jr., along with Executive Vice Presidents Ramón Menendez, Eduardo Martínez-Lima, and Leo Matos.

The agenda included a corporate presentation about the company’s operations, its diversification across the agro-industrial, manufacturing, services, tourism, and real estate pillars, as well as its best practices in social responsibility.

“The economic relationship between the United States and the Dominican Republic is strengthened when there is direct dialogue and fact-based cooperation. Central Romana is a key player in that relationship, and seeing firsthand its operations and social impact reinforces the importance of working together as strategic partners for the economic development of both countries,” emphasized Ambassador Leah F. Campos.

During the visit, Ambassador Campos toured the sugar mill, where she learned about the technical aspects of the productive and operational processes involved in sugar production. The delegation also visited the company’s agricultural communities, where the U.S. diplomat walked through the bateyes and visited schools, housing units, and medical sub-centers that comprise Central Romana’s social commitment infrastructure, interacting with residents of these communities.

The tour included as well a visit to the Human Resources offices in the sugarcane fields, its Union Workers representation and how the payment system is implemented for agricultural employees.

She also learned about Central Romana’s combined use of harvesters and sugarcane loaders, whose modern equipment has made it possible to mechanize up to 55% of the harvest.

The visit further included a tour of the Central Romana Medical Center, where Ambassador Campos became familiar with the specialty areas, clinical staff, and healthcare services offered by the center to employees, their families, residents of La Romana and neighboring communities.

Likewise, she visited the Abraham Lincoln School, where 94% of the student body is made up of children of the company’s workers and employees, as well as the MIR Esperanza School, operated by the MIR Foundation, of which Central Romana is one of the main sponsors supporting the educational and social programs it develops.

With this visit, Central Romana reaffirms its commitment to continue contributing to the strengthening of bilateral trade relations between the Dominican Republic and the United States of America, as part of the fundamental alliance for the economic and social development of both nations.
