CENTRAL ROMANA MEDICAL CENTER BECOMES THE FIRST TEACHING HOSPITAL IN LA ROMANA WITH A MEDICAL RESIDENCY IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE

La Romana – Central Romana Medical Center has officially launched its first medical residency program, welcoming five young professionals who will specialize in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. This milestone marks the hospital’s transformation into the first teaching hospital in the province of La Romana.

Recently approved by the Ministry of Public Health, the program offers five positions for doctors to be trained in critical hospital care areas, with degrees accredited by the Universidad Central del Este (UCE).

The new residents are Drs. Juana Rafaela Torres, Liliana Guzmán, Francis Pérez, María Canó, and Rayber Mercedes. Over the course of four years, they will complete the requirements for graduation and specialization.

“We welcome this group of young doctors to a hospital where ethics and patient care based on medical evidence guide us to provide a service with a more humane approach,” emphasized Dr. José López Larache, Vice President of Health at Central Romana.

“This is an achievement long awaited for more than 30 years, initially proposed by Dr. Francisco A. Gonzalvo, then Medical Director, and supported since then by the Central Romana Administration” emphasized Dr. López.

The supervisory team of the new Residency in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine is led by Dr. Julio Anglada, Head of Emergency; Dr. Tomás Pacheco, Head of Teaching; and Dr. Judith Rodríguez, Residency Program Coordinator.

“Central Romana Medical Center will become a model teaching hospital, as it is equipped with high-level medical technology for teaching, a skilled staff across various specialties, access to a diagnostic imaging center, and 24-hour on-site coverage. This ensures that residents receive training from faculty with the highest academic standards,” stated Dr. Pacheco.

For over ten years, the hospital has also maintained a professional advisory relationship with Florida’s Baptist Hospital, aimed at strengthening key healthcare areas such as Nursing, Intensive Care, and Emergency Services.
