Health and Food

Central Romana provides health services to its employees since 1912, when the company was founded. The health program includes a modern three-level hospital located in La Romana, two Medical Subcenters located in the agricultural zone, ambulance services, mobile medical units that roam the sugarcane communities, among other services.

In terms of food, the company devotes thousand of acres for the food production program aimed exclusively at employees, allowing them to acquire different products at prices well below the local market.



Central Romana Medical Center is a modern three level hospital, with a construction cost of RD$ 1,200 million pesos. It has 84 beds in comfortable private and semi – private rooms, four operating rooms with the latest medical equipment, including Olympus Endo Alpha system or Intelligent Operating Room for general and laparoscopic surgery. Also two areas for intensive and coronary care with wireless telemetry and a specialized burn unit with soaking tub.

The Medical Center has an Obstetrics/Gynecology and newborn department with post -natal intensive care, complete clinical laboratory, and emergency area. There is also a 24 hour pharmacy and cafeteria.

The hospital is backed up with an ambulance service with three modern units to assist patients. Each ambulance is assigned a trained paramedic and they each have an automatic defibrillator (AED).

Every year, Central Romana Hospital along with other major foreign and national foundations such as Healing the Children and Operation Smile perform medical procedures; bringing to the country renowned American doctors for general and pediatric surgery in ophthalmology, ENT, urology, plastic surgery and other corrective practices for free.

Along with the General Hospital it operates a modern imaging medical center called Diagnostica Social, where CT services, mammography, bone densitometry, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unencapsulated, magnification and other studies that require high technology are done.

The company has two medical sub-centers located in the agricultural divisions of La Lechugas and Baiguá, receiving hundreds of patients daily free of charge, including medication.

Four medical mobile units travel daily within the farming communities, fully equipped with preventive medicine to donate and provide free assistance with trained medical personnel.

There is also a Dental Unit and is intended primarily to serve the children of the workers living in the countryside. More than 120 children are taken care of weekly. All these medical services are provided at no cost to the workers.

It also carries out a program of daily fumigation with fogger and knapsack for the prevention of dengue and chikungunya.

Similarly, a program of Water Chlorination focused on the prevention of cholera and other diseases in agricultural areas is implemented. This program is carried out in all the villages where workers and their families reside.

Central Romana devotes thousands of acres for food production aimed exclusively at employees, allowing them to acquire banana, cassava, beans, eggplant, carrots, sweet potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and mixed fruit. Also it facilitates the acquisition of beef and pork, and other processed products such as sausages and cheeses weekly at prices well below the local market areas.

With this program workers can purchase thousands of these products each week. 60% is distributed in agricultural areas and the rest in the industrial area.

In addition to this, through the Department of Social Promotion, the company implements a nutritional program in the sugarcane area for children and TB patients based on eggs and quality meat due its high protein content, which are produced on a farm owned by the company.
