PROTERRA certifies Central Romana in social responsibility and environmental sustainability
La Romana. – Central Romana Corporation announced that its practices of social responsibility and environmental sustainability have been certified under the PROTERRA standard, from a wide ranging scope that includes the production of sugarcane and its by-products.
The Central Romana mill “has demonstrated its ability to implement, monitor and trace a responsible and sustainable production of agricultural commodities through all stages” according to the PROTERRA standard certificate.
Among the parameters that set this certification is the prohibition of the use of GMO’s or the destruction of high value conservation areas in agricultural production.
According to the information released by the company, the audit process to achieve the PROTERRA standard lasted for seven days and included the sugar mill industrial zone, Central Romana’s own sugarcane plantations and sugarcane out-growers or external suppliers.
Visits to every place of interest were made to ensure the effective management of biodiversity, environmental services and natural vegetation; effective management of waste and pollution; management and conservation of water; effective greenhouse gas effect and energy, as well as the analysis of evidence and documentation, and interviews to employees in the workspace.
This important certification demonstrates once again how Central Romana complies properly with all standards and with national and international labor laws in the area of social responsibility, said the company in a public statement.
In the information sent to the press, the company expressed great satisfaction of having achieved this certification by an organization like PROTERRA, responsible for similar certifications here and in other countries of the world.

Central Romana Corporation began its operations in the year 1912 in La Romana, in the Dominican Republic.
