Central Romana obtains its third quality certification by PROTERRA

La Romana.- Central Romana has obtained its third PROTERRA quality certification on social responsibility and environmental sustainability, meeting all standards required by the audit firm Foodchain ID Certification.

Central Romana has been certified by PROTERRA since 2018, for executing the best practices by implementing, monitoring and tracing a responsible and sustainable agricultural production at all stages of its sugar process.

This certification validates the system and procedures for the production of sugarcane. As part of its policies, PROTERRA prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

“We are very pleased to obtain again the PROTERRA certification, which guarantees our company’s efforts in social responsibility and environmental sustainability,” established the company’s administration in a press release.

“To achieve this standard we underwent a thorough audit, which includes the visit to our sugarcane fields, agricultural communities, sugarcane outgrowers, and our sugar mill in the industrial area. For this reason we congratulate all the employees and collaborators involved for their dedication and hardwork”, the press note stated.

Central Romana has been harvesting sugarcane and producing sugar for over a century in the eastern region of the country. It has diversified its development with significant economic investments in the tourism and real estate industry, airport and tourist port management, construction materials, livestock, dairy and cold meats products manufacturing, among others.

Its extensive social responsibility programs include health, with a modern medical center; housing facilities for its workers and employees; schooling and education; access to food products at subsidized costs, and by promoting physical recreation through sporting activities in its rural communities.

During this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, Central Romana to date has invested more than seventy million pesos (RD$70,000,000.00) that have been focused on medical care and contributions to institutions and charities nationwide.

With the amount invested so far, the company has acquired medical equipment, ventilators, bio-protective gear, medicines, and other supplies for the implementation of coronavirus screening. This has allowed the Centro Medico Central Romana to carry out an effective protocol against the disease.
