Como es lógico, donde más se ha distinguido es en el cultivo de la caña de azúcar. Durante varias décadas, la empresa dependía de la importación de variedades traídas de Puerto Rico y Barbados, donde los ingleses habían desarrollado, desde 1880, el Centro de Mejoramiento de las Indias Occidentales. Sin embargo, ya en 1947, la empresa decidió crear su Departamento de Investigaciones Agrícolas, el cual ha hecho, a través del tiempo, grandes contribuciones en el campo agropecuario, especialmente con el desarrollo de nuevas variedades de caña.En 1957, dicho departamento inició un Programa de Mejoramiento Genético, orientado a lograr nuevas variedades de caña que se adaptaran a nuestros suelos calcáreos de baja fertilidad, y que tuvieran una alta tolerancia a períodos prolongados y frecuentes de sequía. Además, la empresa perseguía que estas nuevas variedades fueran de alto rendimiento y resistentes a las plagas.Así fueron desarrollando nuevas variedades, entre las cuales se destacan la CR6101 y la CR67400; la primera muy resistente a los suelos marginales característicos de la región este del país, y la segunda con una excelente calidad de jugos de alto rendimiento. Sólo a manera de ejemplo, la variedad CR67400 significa que el desarrollo de la misma concluyó en el año 1967, como resultado del cruce número 400 (entre muchos otros), del cual se obtuvo finalmente la variedad comercial.In terms of agriculture, the contribution of Central Romana has been just as significant. Just as an example, the CR67400 variety means that its development concluded in the year 1967, as a result of the cross breeding number 400 (among many others), from which the final commercial variety was obtained.fff32
