En 1912 la empresa construyó el primer hospital, que en aquel entonces estaba escindido en dos divisiones: una para trabajadores y otra para empleados administrativos. Un nuevo hospital fue construido en 1916 con edificios de mayor capacidad, en los que los pacientes eran integrados. De ahí surgió el primer centro regional de salud.En la década de 1920, el munícipe romanense, doctor Teófilo Hernández, solicitó al administrador del Central Romana que facilitara a la ciudad el uso del sistema de agua potable que había construido la empresa, con lo que este apreciable líquido pasó a beneficiar a la comunidad. Asimismo, le propuso un programa preventivo para la malaria, la tuberculosis y la viruela, enfermedades que afectaban también a los braceros que importaba la empresa de las Islas Tórtola, Saint Kitts, Saint Martin y otras colonias inglesas. El programa preventivo se llevó a cabo con éxito y contribuyó a controlar estas terribles enfermedades infecto-contagiosas.Durante las siguientes décadas, la compañía construyó otros consultorios médicos cerca de las ferrovías y en áreas rurales que luego pasaron a ser administrados por el gobierno dominicano en la década de 1940, hasta que a mediados de los ’70 la administración fue retomada por el Central Romana. En 1970 se trasladó el hospital a su nuevo local, el que ocupa actualmente. En 1978, el hospital del Central Romana llegó a un acuerdo con el conocido centro norteamericano Mount Sinai, de la Universidad de la ciudad de New York, el cual había recibido una importante donación de la Gulf + Western. Se inició así un intenso programa de asistencia técnica, tanto en el plano educativo como de entrenamiento.Este programa de cooperación abarcó las áreas de epidemiología, administración de la salud, medicina comunitaria, atención primaria y otras. Incluyó además, la visita constante de médicos y profesores del Mount Sinai, que convirtió al hospital en uno de los más avanzados y modernos del Caribe.The health sector is one of the areas in which the company has contributed in an emphatic and significant manner. In 1912 the company built the first hospital, which at that time was split into two divisions: one for the workers and the other for the administrative staff. In 1916 a new hospital was built, with buildings of greater capacity and one in which all patients were integrated. Thus, the first regional healthcare center was born.During the 1920’s local leader Dr. Teófilo Hernández requested the administrator Central Romana to allow the city the use of the potable water system that the company had built, thus providing the community with the benefit of this invaluable and crucial liquid. At the same time, he proposed a preventive program against malaria, tuberculosis and smallpox, diseases that also affected the laborers that the company imported from the islands of Tortola, St. Kitts, St. Martin and other British colonies. The preventive program was successful and contributed to the control of these terrible infectious and contagious diseases.During the following decades, the company built other medical centers near the railway and in rural areas that were later managed by the Dominican government in the 1940’s, until the mid 1970’s when the administration of these was resumed by Central Romana. In 1970 the hospital was moved to its new location, the same premises it occupies today. In 1978, the Central Romana hospital reached an agreement with Mount Sinai, the well-known American center from New York City University, which had received a considerable donation from Gulf + Western. Thus began an intense technical assistance program, both in the educational and in the training fields.This cooperation program covered epidemiology, health administration, community medicine, primary health care, and other fields. It also included the constant visit of Mount Sinai doctors and professors, which made the hospital one of the most advanced and modern in the Caribbean.fff
